Hey all,

Only my second post here. Great board. I have a 1968 Evenrude 9.5 Short Shaft that I am having difficulty in getting to run properly. It runs, but it is acting as though one cylinder keeps cutting out. It happens at all throttle positions and comes and goes at anywhere from 5 to 45 second intervals lasting anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds. Its almost like its fouling, or not making spark. I've cleaned the carberator, and replaced the plugs. I run Champion J8C plugs in it. It all seemed to start when I got gas from a "Marina" gas stop. But I have since flushed the fuel system, replaced all the gas (thought it was fouling) and replaced the plugs. The motor will not run at top speed, and like I said keeps cutting out at all speeds. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Also any ideas on where to get any suggest parts would also be appreciated. There are not many area's my neck of the woods to get parts for an older engine like this.

This motor only has about 100 hours on it. I was given the motor by my uncle about 8 years ago, and it was still in the crate. So it has had very little use. It is primarily used for duck hunting and some fishing.

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

ABS,

I would bet you are losing a cylinder intermitantly.

It could be spark or fuel. However I believe I would concentrate on spark-since your engine only has one carb.

Can you isolate which cylinder loses spark. If you have a timing light, it will tell you.

Once you find that out, I would be looking at coils.

I did notice that it seems to be the "lower" cylinder that is intermittanly missing. That plug looks like its not burning properly.

Any idea on where to find coils, while I'm at it should I look at replacing the plug wires too?

How about points? Never had this one apart at all, so could points be the issue. Admittedly, outboards aren't my forte. I'd much rather play with a 383 stroker!

Is the Evenrude 1968 9.5hp twin also considered a sportwin?

Thanks again for the help.

Aaron

ABS- I had the exact same trouble with a 1974 9.9hp sportwin. Similar situation motor sat for several years and I use it on my duck boat.I found the root cause to be the driver coil. As a perventative measure I repaced the points, condenser, and coils. P.s' it was my bottom cylinder that was miss firing.

Hey thanks for the insight. I need to get it up and running before I start Duck hunting on the Ole' Miss. Did you just get your parts at a local Dealer? Or is there sometplace online to purchase the parts?

Thanks Again!

Aaron

ABS- I was able to purchase all my parts over the counter. If memory serves me right the hole ignition tune up cost less than $100.00. In 1974 the cost of the coils skyrocketed. There is NO substitue for reliability when you hunt 3 miles off shore in Saginaw Bay.Don't forget the shop manual.

songdog,

Hey thanks again. I checked the nearest dealer and they quoted me $23 for the tune-up kit (points and condensers) and another $22 each for the coils. He suggested that based on the "low hours" he would start with the tune up kit. If that doesn't take care of it, then I'll move to the coils.

Glad to hear your a fellow waterfowler. That's some big water your hunting. I bet its a good time? Duck populations still up in your area? The biggest water I've hunted regularly was Lake of the Woods, so I know about the 3 miles out reliability thing. I relocated a few years ago to the Southeastern part of the state, so I primarily hunt the Mississippi now. Which presents a whole new set of challenges!

Good luck with the fowl this year!

Aaron (Captain of the best little duck boat on the ole' Miss, "Fowl Weather")
