I just recently purchased a mirrocraft 16ft boat, trailer and a 68 evinrude electric shift 40hp motor. I think I got a really good deal, I only paid $400 bucks. The motor runs, but the guy said the generator was going bad. Wear can I find a rebuild one for cheap. I found a new one for 350.00, which seems high. My second question, is this a good motor, is it worth while fixin up or will it continue to cost money. Like I said it seems to run well, but I think it needs a new impeller and lower unit seals, which I have.
Are there any secrets that I should know about this motor. As you probably guest this is my first boat and motor, so I am just learning.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I WOULD SUGGEST GETTING A RAPAIR MANUAL. I HAVE A 62 ENVINRUDE MOTOR AND MY REPAIR MANUAL WOULD COVER YOUR BOAT. I AM WILLING TO HELP YOU OUT AS MUCH AS I CAN.

Hello.
Sounds like a sweet deal. You can probably take your generator to an alternator rebuilding place and have it checked out.
In the Seloc book for engines up to 40 horse from '56 till '70 there are good directions for rebuilding it yourself, complete with pictures."Is going bad" might very well be only the brushes needing replacement and this very defenitely costs much less than 350 dollars.
Is your engine a good one?
Most OMC engines are very trust worthy, but for all I know, yours has been fished out of the ocean. The best way to find this out is to go to your local outboard mechanic and get an educated opinion. This will be much smarter than taking an opinion from somebody who never saw your engine
Good luck.

A boat is a hole in the water you keep on throwing money into, but oohh the joy of it.
