I'm trying to do the same with a 1968 FD-22A. Can anyone point me to the part numbers or the model of the engine that you pulled your parts off of. It would be really helpful if I knew exactly what parts to search for. The parents are getting a little old to be yanking a pull cord every start.

Fact for you.----Any of the 22 cubic inch model made from 1957 to 1976 can be used to harvest the parts.---That is the 18 / 20 / 25 HP models.-----Many sellers might claim that a starter set-up from say a 1984 model 20 / 25 / 35 HP will work.----Simply ignore them.----The key item you need is the starter bracket and starter.-----Your motor likely has the ring gear already.-----Solenoid from any Johnson / Evinrude / Mercury . Yamaha / Mariner / Suzuki can be used.----Wires and switch are also easy to scource.

Well after a good bit of research I finally figured out what I need is starter bracket part number 0317328, which also goes by 0126050 0126256 (and sometimes without the leading 0). And starter motor 0385401.

I do enough of my own auto work that I can grab a spare solenoid and wires out of my hoard and a new battery (or just borrow a car battery from a lesser driven car as needed) and be set.

What absolutely blows my mind is that I can get the starter motor new for under $55, but the bracket is 4x as expensive USED! (New is even worse price gouging) It's just one piece of metal that any schmoe could cast reproductions of or machine the equivalent of if they had an original for reference...I'd guess it's aluminum (probably costs them under $10 a pop to make), but with the prices I'm seeing I wonder if it's some gold alloy.

I understand supply and demand... I also see that if I had an original as a model I could make repops for half the market price and still make enough money for it to be worth wile. (I'm sort of surprised no one else has tried this yet).

I'm in the Waukesha Wisconsin area.

I was at a dealer / boat shop a few years ago.-----Found an 18 HP in the scrap bin.----Had the electric start on it.----Free to take it away.-----Keep your eye on Craiglist / facebook etc and see if a $100 donor motor comes along.

Shouldn’t be to hard to locate a parts motor in your area. When you do make your part mold and get busy. I’m sure one could do well reproducing these parts as an extra income hobby.

I am also looking to get a local Mennonite shop to see about reproducing parts.----Should not be hard to cast that bracket in SOLID aluminum to then machine bolt holes and hole for the starter.----Should be able to produce that at 1/4 the market price !!
