I have a 40 hp 1969 Evinrude manual shift that I'm trying to get back into
Running condition. I have removed the lower unit and put in a new impeller
replaced the lower lube, new plugs, cleaned carb. 2 questions. I have a hose
hooked up to the motor for running purposes. Still runs kind of rough and
there is a hole right above the lower skag on the side and after the motor
has run for a while and I stop it there is some kind of foamy stuff coming out
of it, but does not appear to be the lower green gear lube, what is this hole for?

rich l
The gunk running out of a drain hole is a mix of exhaust-burned and unburned gas, oil and water.
Most goes out the exhaust but to prevent freezing
and bursting, small pockets have small holes to drain whatever runs down. A poor running engine makes more gunk than one in good tune.
Backfire ;)
