Ive got smoke in the cowling, I replaced the base powerhead gasket, and the seal for the shift linkage. Now I have discovered these four little holes under the seal for the midsection. Looked on the diagram, and they aint supposed to be there!!!! Im now sure that this is the problem for my smoke in the cowling. Should I plug them up? I didnt see them at ALL on the parts diagram?? They are about 1/4 each. Also, can I run the motor on the lake with the cowling off? is this bad for the motor?

Picture would be nice. Without the cowl it will just be very noisy

Couldn't get any pictures of them, to hard to focus on. They are 1/4 and located on each side where they are marked on the diagrams

They may be drain holes, but I doubt it. Does your service manual have any pictures of the midsection? If they aren't drain holes then a bit of High Temp Epoxy Putty is in order.

Most common place for smoke to enter the cowling is the o-ring on top of the water pump housing (and/or the extension tube if it is a long shaft). Are those items in place on your motor?

Are you talking about part #10, 7 or 6? But because this is all consealed into the ehsaust housing, and not the midesection covers, how would that make a diffrense? isnt the midsection filled with smoke anyways? No long shaft, no worries. Also just put a new seal in with rollo foam, with a little spray firewall foam inbetween the cracks.

Link doesn't work. But I guess it is same as my diagram. #6 is an o-ring that goes in groove around splines area of drive shaft. #10 is drive shaft seal that goes in pump housing. #7 is the o-ring that is the notorious smoke culprit. I do know what I am talking about, seen it hundreds of times where people leave it out.

To explain: Water pump is surrounded by exhaust when running. The drive shaft runs in an isolation tube to keep exhaust from reaching it and the splines and crankshaft seal at upper end. There is a vent hole at upper end of that isolation tube. If o-ring is missing, exhaust enters isolation tube and blows out the vent hole at the top. Guess what---the vent hole is inside the cowling!!!
