Ok, Im kinda new to boating and Im trying to set the timing on my 69 55hp evinrude and am not sure which marks on the flywheel represent top dead centre as there is two. One has two arrows and the other is two ovals with 1969 v4 written next to them.
The other thing I was stuck with was what the timing advance should be.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Good question: That doesn't agree with what is written in the factory service manual. According to the SM, there should be two timing marks on the flywheel, a straight one and a triangular one. The 55hp uses the straight one. The same flywheel is used on V4 engines and they use the triangular mark.

OK, according to the book, full advance timing is done at full throttle in gear. With the timing light connected to #1 (top) cylinder, the straight mark should be aligned within the timing mark on the ring gear guard. Adjust the full advance screw to make is happen.

TDC is not an issue. But breaker point gap is. It should be .010" (.012" for new points). That should be done before checking the timing.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I took the straight lines as being oval.

only problem i got now is the bastard wont start, seems to be losing spark somewhere in the distributor.

Ive checked and cleaned the points and they still look good, set the gap to 0.010" but still cant seem to get a good spark at the plugs. I have checked all wiring and all seems well insulated and cant see any reason why i should be losing spark.
unfortunately I bought the engine with the coil conversion done to it and since I've replaced the coil and resistor which got a better spark but it still wont seem to fire.
compression on the cylinders was 145, 143, 145 so I'm assuming that's all good. and all 3 carbs have been rebuilt and are working.
so now im stumped.
