I have a 1969 7.5 hp mercury. Fuel pump wasn't in great shape so i rebuilt it and installed new plugs. This solved the problem I was having with no power. Now when the motor is running it seems to be misfiring while at a all throttle levels slow, medium or even WOT. It does run good but misses. Now this is where I give you the line...I am new to this and don't know much. Coil, stator, points? Something with the ignition?
Thankyou for any knowledge you can provide.

hmmm with misfiring id have to say its your points, they may not be adjusted properly, this can occur if they are set wider then they are supposed to (in your case .020) you should pull the flywheel and point cover and have a look inside, see if they need to be adjusted, for this you will need a feeler guage. i dont believe your engine has thunderbolt ignition just the phelon magneto system, so pull the wheel and have a look at your points, i believe your problem is most likely electrical

Thanks for the F/U. Like your handle, sounds like some of the affectionate nicknames my brother had for me in my youth. Also various unsavory substances he felt my brains were made of.

Regarding the condition of the points. They have seen better days. One was pitted really bad. Again thanks.
