Just started motor for first time out of water. Used ears hooked to water hose. Should water come out of the upper 2 holes in the rear just below the powerhead? If not is it the water pump? I never noticed water coming from here before, but,I suspect that is't supposed to. <br />It's a 69 johnson 85 hp. First boat, first outboard.

sbrice,Water doesn't usually discharge from those two ports unless the engine is in water with some head pressure against the exhaust and it should discharge more when the engine is up to speed in the water. When you run the engine on the hose, after its warmed up,perform a touch check in several locations around the head covers and upper block and see if you can leave your hand on for several seconds before needing to remove. This will at least tell you if its significantly overheating while running at low speed .If you don't know the history of the last waterpump replacement on your engine,I highly recommend installing, or having installed a new pump kit and T/stat for peace of mind.Good luck.
