I recently changed my lower units gear oil and it was pretty milky. I haven't had the boat in the water yet, but I've found one of the leaks.....the seal on the gear shift arm pin. This screw is above and forward of my drain/fill screw for the gear oil.....see attached. The gear shift arm pin is part number 23 as listed.

Can I remove this screw, put a new seal on it and reinstall? Or will this drop gears inside the unit requiring a full tear down?

It is best to remove the lower unit and lay it flat. When removing the screw there is less chance of something slipping out of place. It can be done on the motor as long as no one touches the shifter while it is out. When you have it laying down maybe tape the shifter to the drive shaft or have it laying flat so it wont be disturbed when you have it apart.

Thanks. So it would be a very bad idea to try this with the motor on the boat then?

Not a very bad idea to do it on the motor but a better idea to remove it and do it. As long as nothing moves and you do it quick the shifter should stay in place. If it were me I would remove the lower unit.

OK, that pretty much settles it then. Thank you very much for your help.
