69 Evinrude 25HP - Replaced Impeller - Did I Miss Something?

Let me preface this by saying I'm an outboard novice! I pulled my old 25HP out of storage after a few years in there and, on the recommendations of folks here, I replaced the impeller just to be safe. A bit of a pain, but I'm not sure if I missed something because the entire lower part seems pretty warm to me when running. I know there's a water tube that has to go back into it's hole when you replace the lower but it's impossible to know if you made it or not and when I looked at it, it appeared as though it would have been pretty tough to miss it and be able to bolt the lower back on.

It's been a while since I ran this motor, I don't remember if water is supposed to come out of the exhaust or not. I have it in a barrel of water and it fires up and it runs like a dream, started in just a couple pulls, and it seems to be working perfectly - but since I didn't see any water coming out of the engine I shut it down so I wouldn't overheat it. The engine itself is no hotter than I would expect, but the lower body where the exhaust is seems really quite warm.

How do I know if my impeller job is doing what it should? I've been watching videos on this year of engine and it's hard to see if there's any visible signs - like water flowing from the exhaust - that I'm missing.

Any help is appreciated!

PS - I saw this video on Youtube and it looks like water should be coming out of my exhaust, but I've seen others that it does not.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XK2gstwyR0M shows water coming out

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV-BHXgDi1w is two years newer, but basically the same and no water comes out.

The second video shows a normally operating water pump and water discharge. The first video is meaningless because he is running it on a water hose. You cannot test a water pump on a hose because the pump only allows hose water to pass through (it is not pumping it through).

Thank you for the response. I took a closer look at the 2nd video, where it's in a barrel, and it does look like some water comes out of the exhaust. If I'm not seeing that then should I assume that the water tube may not be in it's proper place?

fair assumption (water tube). Need to see some water out of the exhaust port. Test temp on the top of the head -- leg carries engine exhaust and water from the powerhead, so will be warm. I think if you find it hot to the touch, you are getting exhaust gas and not water -- but temp on the top of the head is the test. Too hot to touch means it's running too hot.

If it is operating correctly, you would not even be asking. They blow a significant amount of water out that exhaust relief. Not a steady flow, but a large amount of water spray being blown out by the exhaust.

Take note of the depth of the motor in the water barrel. If it is not at least that deep, pumping may be erratic. They are designed to be run on a boat on the lake, not in a barrel. But the barrel is ok, if deep enough.

Yes or you did not put the drive pin in for the impeller.

And that's what I wondered myself, so I took the entire thing apart (after taking apart and assembling to ensure the tube was in the right place) and I noticed the impeller pin was sunk all the way into the shaft. After some coaxing it came out and I've ordered another, as well as another new impeller just to be safe.

Thank you all for the excellent advice!

I'm glad that I didn't run this thing very long, as soon as that housing got hot I knew something was wrong - added to the fact that I didn't see any water jetting out. But three pulls from years in storage starts this thing up - it's hard to ask for a better built engine than that!
