69 Evinrude Explorer - New Shake

I have seen a number of threads speaking about sudden shakes developing for numerous reasons, and thought I would ask directly about mine. I have recently purchased a 1969 Evinrude Explorer. I have had it out a few times for about 10-12 total running hours. The open interior is exactly what I was looking for to fish from and am somewhat fond of the "mule" like appearance. Today I was riding along when it felt like I hit something submerged. Perhaps a tree top or log. Texas Corps of Engineer lakes tend to have plenty of timber. There was a thud and then an immediate shake. The motor never shut off or sputtered because of the impact. A bit in a panic I did turn the engine off and raise the drive to see if there was any visible damage. Since I did not see any I limped back to the boat ramp with the shimmy and put it up on the trailer. Nothing looks cracked or dislodged other than some noticeable scrapes on the hull. I trailered it home, hooked the hose up, and fired it up. The engine ran smooth with no knocking. I have also noticed my electric shift is clicking when throttling up or down. Something it was not previously doing. Possibly coincidence but I doubt it. I knew when buying a 1969 boat I was taking chances on parts being available should something like this occur. Any advice or direction to start looking for my source of issue is appreciated. I checked the prop and there is a small bend in one blade but I am not sure that is the culprit or it is bent enough to have an impact. Thanks in advance.

OH.. and a few details:
The Hull is a 1969 Evinrude Explorer
The engine is a 1972 Buick 155hp - Replaced about 8-10 years ago, so I am not sure of the original equipment
The stringer is OMC and does not have an adjustable trim.

It may be the prop or else the prop shaft got bent.

Howdy, Welcome aboard!

You might get more answers in the outboard section. Johnson & Evinrude Outboards

(You're in the I/O section)

Maybe a "MOD" will move this thread for you!

Rick, he does have an I/O.

To the OP, I would take off the prop and check the run out of the prop shaft.

Not sure what you mean my the electric shift clicking.

You'll need one of the guru's to walk through it: I'm wondering if you've jolted the coils in your lower. I don't know much about taking one apart though.

I'm not sure what order to start eliminating problems, but how do the ball gears look?

Thanks guys.

I will need to pull the prop for sure. I have a spare prop, so I will at least replace it. The clicking I am referring to is the actual lever is now making a clicking sound. Almost like unwinding an egg timer. As I move more towards throttle up it gets closer in increment and slightly stiffer to move. I have a feeling that I may have layered issues going on. I think I am resigning myself to taking it to a professional this week to have it gone thru. Something I probably should have done when I initially bought it. I was kind of going on the "fingers crossed" approach. All in all, I love the boat, but hate that I hit something.

Hmm......Bruce, this is your not so subtle way of telling me to RTFQMC? [Read the Fracking Question MORE CAREFULLY!!]?

Your boat is an electric shift, so the lever isn't moving anything mechanical to the stern drive itself. It is moving the throttle, but all that happens to the stern drive is you send a "charge" to the shift coils.

My shifter (should be roughly what you have) will make a slight "clicking" like a ratcheting (sp). If it's stiffening up, I'd look at two things first - your tension control (should be on the bottom) and that your cable didn't get jostled around.

Thanks! I will look at it. I suppose it is possible it was clicking prior to the incident, and I was just too excited to ever notice it. I will look it over though to make sure. I really appreciate it.

Good news. got it back from the shop. Had them go thru the fluids, and regales a few spots while they had it. turns out it was the prop. Just badly bent.
