Guys, Got my motor to work. The points were dirty so i wasnt getting a spark. But now,l My Johnson motor fires right up but when its started it went right to full bore spinning very fast. Can someone tell me how to fix that. it is electric shift, choke, etc. It should be idling in neutral right? Model # is 85ESL69.

Marine Guy

Re: 69 Johnson Electric Shift Assistance

This engine got an Hydro-electric lower unit , default gear is forward ( no power )

Quick search + copy/pase from older post :)

>forward = no power to solenoids " no power to any wires" should be forward

>neutral = power to one solenoid "green wire" power to this wire should be N

>reverse = power to both solenoids "blue wire" + "green wire"

Check the oil in the lower unit ,use only " Type C " oil , other name = OMC premium blend ( for use on OMC/Evinrude/Johnson lower nuits 196? > 1972 )
For more info ,search the forum , look for "hydro electric" ,

The motor has to be turning over or running to shift. It will be in forward if -- as mentioned -- there is no power to either shift wire.

Basically, if you started it without it being hooked to a control box, it will be in forward gear.

As for the high rpm's, youll have to look at sync-n-link. Probably the throttle linkage was advanced some.

when I turn the ignition key the engine turns over and revs up. it is in forward but the prop is spinning very fast. It is an electric stick shift f, n, r is it. I had the shifter in neutral and when it started it fired right up extremely fast. Shouldnt it be idling?

Re: 69 Johnson Electric Shift Assistance

From your response we assume you had the motor connected to a control box. Was the throttle cable connected to the motor also?

BTW -- this is not an electric shift lower unit. Its whats called a hydro-electric shift. It relies on hydraulic oil pressure to shift. The solenoids just open certian passages for the oil to push the clutch dog to a given position.

Re: 69 Johnson Electric Shift Assistance

I dont know what the shifter is connected to. Im dumb. i do know this. When I turn the key on the motor revs up extremely fast even though the shifter is in neutral. i need help from there. The motor sounds great but It should be idling right or no?

Paulie

If the engine's racing away when you start it, the first thing to check is the carburetor throttle butterflies. It sounds like you have the linkages adjusted improperly, holding the butterflies open.... or they're stuck open.
