Hey Ya'll,

I have a 1969 Johnson outboard 20 hp motor.
I just got it 6 months ago and the first time I took it out, I noticed a slip or miss. It only happens when I give it full throttle or high speed. Idle is fine and it has been getting worse with every outing. I throttle up to full speed and on the way it happens and then while I am running full blast. it feels like a disengage or miss of some kind...it doesnt die, it's quick like a mechanical problem. Almost feels like i am hitting stuff with the prop but I'm in 20 ft of water. I saw a couple articles here about clutch dogs ?....do I have one ?...or what can I take apart to see my problem ? I dont have a manual but cannot afford one right now. Retired and limited income.

model # 20R-69B
Serial # J3101576
has forward/neutral/reverse
pull start with tiller throttle and stearing

Thanx in advance for any help,
Mike

It does sound like you have a clutch dog going out. Here's one way you can get by for awhile. Take the clutch dog out and turn it around. This gearcase is quite simple, so just pay attention as you take it apart. Turning the dog around could get you by, but if it does it again, you will have to replace both the dog, and forward gear. But then! you may have to anyway.

HEY...I'm back...

took me a few days to make time to break open the gearcase....but I did and I have "good news"...as you suspected, the clutch-dog was worn on the forward side...but the gears all look great !!!
yippieeee !!!!!!
Anyway, as I never really throttle up in reverse , I simply reversed the clutch-dog and put it back together !...I will refill the gearcase later today and take her for a spin...But I have 1 concern...what caused this wear ?...since the motor is a 69, I'm not sure if it's just the normal wear or if the dog is completly engaging !!!...how can I be sure of this ???

thanx again for the help...I am a boater on a low budget and can't afford to let the shop work on my stuff. It means alot to me that this site is here and you folks help us like this....thanx a million !!!

Mike

Many things can cause the clutch dog to wear. Simple use (over a long period of time), abuse (neutral drops at high RPM), or misuse (e-e-e-e-easing it into gear thinking you're doing the motor a favor). Always shift at the lowest possible throttle setting and always shift firmly and quickly.

Make sure the surfaces between the gearcase halves are spotless - clean with carb cleaner or laquer thinner. Then use some PermaTex type sealant to close it up. Make sure you do around the o-ring on the rear bearing carrier, too....
- Scott

OK...I'm back again and now I am happy ! :)

opened the gearcase back up as per your instructions and permatex'ed it good...sure is hard trying to hang the gears and stuff while puting the gearcase back together...any way....sealed it and tourqued the screws in a off-set pattern (as I was taught by another mechanic) and filled her with gear-lube...pennzoil marine i think...well, then I got to the ramp and off I went...full throttle..no slip...acceleration..no slip...even reverse had no slip...but i dont gun it in reverse...
anyway, turns out the advice I got here was right on and I would like to thank all who contributed...made my day...I was zippin' araound for about an hour straight...full blast...then full throttle-ups from idle speed...perfect !!!
I feel like I learned alot about gearcases as well...at least simple ones like mine.
You should have seen me though....zippin' all around...up and down the lake...i even got behind a 12' jon boat with 2 guys that had a 25 hp and I walked them down with my 20 hp....zoom....i was faster than lightning..(well, almost)
what a joy it is to zoom around !!!
love mother nature and she will love you back !

Ya'll take care and will be here the next time I need advice...oh yes...I did finally get myself a manual...a seloc...it makes alot of things clear for me...don't own a motor without the manual !!!...i trust that stement...ok...babbling has begun so will go now to zoom zoom some more....watch me go...cuz i'm gone !!!

Mike

Highvoltage,

I have the exact same engine. I had to the same problem and I replaced my clutch dog and forward and reverse gears. If you need good parts at discount prices I have found that www.twincityoutboard.com has everything for your motor.

Found that the problem on mine was caused by the shift linkage not being adjusted right.

ZOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM
