hello, i need some help please i have a 69 johnson 25hp and its giving me fits. I got it out for the first time this year and it ran alright wouldnt idle very well sounded like it was running on one cylinder at idle. I did the tune up kit and took it out again. It ran good at idle and puttin around but soon as i wot it, it would fall on its face and make a sound kind of like running too lean? I check the spark and have spark on both cylinders. Im thinking its that high speed needle valve maybe got some junk in it? I never have rebuilt a carb is there any links or any advise? Another thing could i just take that high speed needle out and clean it? I heard of that tool u can make to take that needle out. ive looked on here with no luck finding out how to make that tool, is there a specific link? any advise or help would be greatly appeciated! thank you

If it does not have a high speed adjustable needle then it's a fixed jet. Time for carb rebuild. Not all that hard to do. Get a manual and go from there.

50 bucks is probably cheap for them to do it? I am assuming 50 labor plus parts? They are not that difficult and the guys on here are great about talking you through it

Re: 69 johnson25hp carb

the only thing I disagreed with on the video was the lack of any kind of carb cleaner. I usually soak mine overnight and then blow them out with compressed air. All he did was blow them out with no cleaner. That carb looked awful clean to begin with as well.

I agree, the "bathing buckets" are a great aid.

I believe the main strength of the video is to give someone a sense of what he/she will be seeing/experiencing before they begin. Easier to comprehend visually than through text.

Your trouble sounds like what happened to me many years ago. It was a bad condenser. Points and condenser were replaced and runs like new. But maybe your tune up kit covered this. It was the only trouble I had in 39 years of running it.

My 1969 25 hp. Not to do, but this motor still has original water pump and impeller.

Wow, the pic of that 25 is in good shape. It is time to change the impeller though!

Those are great motors! Decent power and very light. And, like the rest of the OMC motors of that era, they are very simple motors with very little to go wrong. Bring an extra prop and a tin of shear pins along with a few tools and they rarely let you down.

Makes me want to go buy a little flat boat just so I have an excuse to go find one for my collection!

Thanks. It is a very very good motor. 78 lbs. and fast. Still all original, except spark plugs, points, condenser, lower unit oil and grease jobs. I saved the original white prop and I'm running a spare same OMC prop, it came painted black. The original shear pin just bends.

I know I'm bad. So going to look at the impeller and it works so well. I have countless running hours on this motor, including skiing.

Re: 69 johnson25hp carb

Alright, i took the carb off and it looked almost new. but i cleaned it out and put it all back together and took it down to the boat shop they said it looked fine. the mechanic put a new float valve on it for me cause the old one was sticking. i put the carb back on and still have the same problem. i was checking the motor out and i move the thing under the flywheel on the outside of the motor that the throttle moves on sorry dont know what this is called?armature or something? i started it up and it went full throttle great just like it used too. tried it again it acted funny again bogging down real bad on wot. i checked the compression and have 115 on both cylinders. does that part i moved have anything to do with maybe timing or fuel. i think ive ruled out the carb problem. maybe advanced timing? and could it have something to do with the kill switch i noticed bare wire on the connections. but it idle's great and sounds great at idle and even a little more than idle its just when its wot.
IM STUCK!!
