Hi y'all! I am getting ready to fire up my 1970 Evinrude Fisherman outboard and I wanted to check the oil and when I pull the screw on the lower left side that says "Check Oil" I don't see how that is "checking" the oil! LOL! Nothing happens.....is the oil supposed to spill out of that hole if it is full? I am sorry to ask such silly questions but this is my first Rodeo and I don't want to screw it up. Also...if I need to put oil in...what kind is the best? Thanx for all the help you all have given me so far! I REALLY appreciate it!

80-90 wt gear oil -- but buy the outboard oil for lower units. marine stuff.

two large plugs. Open both if you want to drain (should do that). Lower is for filling, top is for venting (push oil in until leaks from the top -- buy one of those little hand pumps to save some grief.) Do not unscrew the phillips screw. Do not unscrew the phillips screw.

would work. that oil container is pretty deep, though -- tube might not go all the way to the bottom (stuff is sold in shallower containers similar to reg motor oil). Little pump makes it a little less messy. not completely.

Cool! Thanks a bunch! I will get that changed out and then I am ready to fire this rascal up :) I hope to get her in the water for a test run this weekend or first of next week.

Is this the screw you said NOT to remove?

Yes, that holds the shifter lever in place. Not really difficult to put back if you do remove it, but there's no reason to unscrew it unless you take the gear case apart.
