6hp Chrysler is not back for long...

I picked up the motor yesterday after having the head milled and a new head gasket put on. The marina owner had to get the invoice so I could pay the rest of the bill because it was still in the shop with the motor. Hold that thought for a second.

When I got home I put the motor in the barrel and pulled the rope. Then the rope hung limp. I removed the cover and hand turned the crankshaft to rewind. It then pulled normally for a few turns and then hung up again. That is when I notice the pinion collar was chipped. The piece that was broken off was right up to the teeth. Boy was I ticked. I called the owner and told him about it and he said for me to bring it in Monday...which I will. Now back to the invoice.

Maybe the mechanic knew he broke it and was going to change the part and he didn't tell anyone. I don't know...what I do know though is that I want it fixed right so when I pull the rope the motor starts. That part isn't expensive, is it? Would it be pretty easy to change? It looks easy.

New pinion is about 12 bucks and you can change it yourself. the only trick is to rewind the spring to the proper tension before re-inserting the drive pin.
You do need to loosen or remove the housing bolts to make room so the pinions will slid past the flywheel. As i remember, the 6 is slightly different than the 9,9-15 but all the small engine pull starters are similar. The screw in the top of the shaft holds in the drive pin. It must be removed and a longer bolt with a jam nut should be used to gently unwind and rewind the spring with the drive pin out. Relatively simple procedure--maybe 20 minutes to 1/2 hour if you have never don it before. See if you can find any manual in the library to explain the whole procedure. No need to buy one for something this simple.
