I recently bought what I believe is a 6 hp 1979 Evinrude (model # 6904E). The motor runs great, but I have a few questions.
1. When testing the motor on the flusher, the flusher was on improperly and the water pump did not pump water for a couple of minutes. However, I have since had the boat on the water and the water pump was working fine. Is everything OK since the pump still pumps or has damage still been done?
2. When I drained the lower unit the oil was thick and chocolate brown colored, but I saw no oil/water separation. My manual says water present will show up as a "creamy whitish" color. Do I have water in the lower unit or just a motor that has not had the lower unit changed in a long time?
3. When I pulled the propeller, I noticed uneven wear on the inside of the prop and the housing where it meets. Do i need a new prop or is this an indication of something more serious? Also, is there no seal behind the shear pin that can be checked without disasembling the entire lower unit?

thanks,

Re: 6hp Evinrude ?s

Hi work4bait
You are correct, your motor is a 1979. If you haven't changed the water pump empeller now is a real good time. If it still pumps thats great. Question is for how long? No sense spoiling a good fishing trip with a burnt up motor. Sounds like that gear oil is just old, I'll bet it stinks too. Just refill with fresh and keep an eye on it. To check prop shaft seal just make sure there is no fish line or grass etc wraped around down there and no oil leeking out. I am not sure about the wear you describe. Sounds as if something may have gotten wraped up in the prop at one time. Check for a bent prop shaft? Good luck have fun.
