6hp Evinrude Shift Rod Disconnect

I am attempting to change the impeller on my 1979 6hp Evinrude - first time attempting this. I have removed the lower unit attaching bolts and the unit dropped only slightly. I rotated the flywheel, like the service manual says, to align the pin in upper driveshaft. Now the flywheel does not rotate. Does that mean the pin is aligned? How do you tell, since it is hidden in the exhaust housing? The book says that the lower unit will drop 1 inch where I can then remove the bottom shift connector bolt. I maybe have an inch, but I can't get a socket in there. It has a screw driver head, but won't I drop the screw into the lower unit if I do that.

Hi Workforbait
Yes you could drop that screw. If you do just get it when it falls out the bottom.
You can try to grab it with a needle nose pliars etc while unscrewing, if you drop it no big deal.

I have tried getting the screw out, but I can barely get a screw driver through the opening. The screw is in so tight that I can not turn it without stripping the head. A socket would work for me, but the opening is too small to get the socket through. I got the flywhel to rotate, just had to take the pressure off of the lower unit. Again, how do you know if you have the pin lined up on the driveshaft?

Move the shift leaver to forward or rev to get your lower unit to drop just a wee bit more, you might have to rotate prop shaft a little to line up that pin a little better, So l\u will drop also. I use the slimest deep scoket I have, it barely fits. You just about got it, be patient, keep on it.

Alcan,
You are the man!! It took some wrestling, but I eventually got a socket in there. I had the cart before the horse; after I got the shift rod disconnected, THEN you turn the flywheel. I turned the flywheel 1/4 turn after shift rod disconnect and the lower unit dropped right off. It looks like getting the shift rod connected back might be a real bear, however. One more question. I had a lot of moisture inside the exhaust housing (I ran it today). Is that normal?

Hi Work4bait
Yes the moisture is normal. Good job I knew you could do it. I use those heamastat things to help line up sometimes.
