Just got an evinrude 6hp 1970 starts up fine wishing three pulls cold and once when it’s warm has good compression. I had the idle set fine using the steps mentioned in these forums. When storing the engine I accidentally moved the knob out of place and when going to reset it whenever I make the mixture completely learn or rich the idle does not seem to be effected. It will idle low for about 5 seconds then die. Not sure what’s going on carb has been rebuild as well as point and coils

what did you do to "clean" the carb ? did you inspect and clear the top drip chamber and the very small orifice feeding the top half of the carb via the side fuel channel ?

see carb issues on older carbs yours has no bowl but basic issues remain

Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or more on both leads ?-----The motor should respond to low speed mixture , so revisit carburetor work.-----Check the pointy end of low speed mixture screw.---Post a picture of it.

This is the diagram for my carb thinking I should just do a rebuild myself since the guy before me may have used cheap parts it looks like

do the easy stuff first

Racerone's post#4 is critical ...to progress you need to answer all questions

have you tried pumping the fuel bulb in case the engine is starving

Rebuilding these carbs may only entail a good cleaning of all passages and blow dry them. did you check the small side channel orifice feeding the top section ?

the air may be leaking by the LS needle temporarily grease (butter) up
the shaft to seal it 100 % (see causes in the above picture)

is the tank vent open ?... remove the cap

I also have a 6 H.P. Evinrude that I had a problem with idling & starting after I rebuilt the carb with new, CHEAP parts. I rebuilt the carb a second time with OEM parts and it was a world of difference. The cheap parts that I put it were junk. The gaskets literally softened and became distorted from the fuel in the carb bowl. Replaced the cheap parts and I was all set. Runs great still after over a year ago.
