hey guys Iam looking at a kicker/trolling motor for my boat to go along side my merc 650, and I found a 6hp merc, it is a white 2 cylinder i belive it is late 60s early 70s but Iam really not sure, it appears to be in fair condition the paint is still in decent condition, it does not appear to be water cooled, at least I coudn't find any intake area, anyways just wondering if you could tell me approximatly what year it is, and anything about the motor, I am assuming it is fairly reliable based that it is only 6hp and 2 cylinders....thanks for your help guys,

it is somewhat like this only alot smaller

oh ok thanks, do you know where the intak would be then, I didn't see anything on it but it was kinda dark and we only had a dim light, I'll be checking it out tomorow and starting it up and what not, and is it a 50:1 mixture?

Laddies knows his stuff and I am not inclined to disagree with him--however, I would add that I have a white 1962 Merc 110 (9.8 hp) which is very similar to the 6 hp. Bob Grubbs at Grubbs Marine (oldmercs.com, where you can find a lot of parts and info on your motor) recommended 50:1 for the 1962 using modern TCW-3 oil, which is much better than the original oil. If you post the serial number, we can determine the exact year of your motor. And in the meantime, if you are not sure about the oil, running more oil is better than not enough, and if the motor has not been run for a while extra oil would be a good idea.

Mercury Marine never has recommended 50 to 1 in any pre 64 engines. I would agree that they have the same bearing and rings but as a mechanic would never recommend anything that mercury does not I don't need the liability of it
