6r75r - won't run on lower settings

Dad gave me a 14' Jon boat and 6HP Johnson 1975 motor. He last used the boat in '03 with a trolling motor. Never got around to buying a tank for the Johnson. So I get the boat this year and purchased a tank, hose and fittings. I replaced the spark plugs and the motor started right up. It wouldn't run on any setting but start and fast. Shifting it caused the motor to die and it wouldn't run on lower settings.

I thought maybe it was a fuel problem, so I ambituously attacked the fuel filter. I removed 4 screws and the (what I learned afterwards...) fuel pump came apart in my hands. I attempted to put it back together, but with the little gaskets an springs, I couldn't tell up from down.

So my question is, does it make sense to just order the fuel pump for about $70 shipped along with the carb repair kit, get myself a manual and give it another go?

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

You may be able to figure out the pump.Pretty simple operation. the diaphram is pulsed drawing gas in through one valve and pushing it out through the other.Valves allow gas to flow only one way.Someone may be along with a diagram for the pump.Simplest repair would be to bolt on a new pump. You will most likely need to rebuild the carb with special attention to all passages and jets.Kits here at iboats.A manual is a must and a factory manual is best.look here at iboats and then probably www.kencook.com. for factory reprints.

There are several fuel pumps listed. Not sure which one is the correct one to use.

Here is the OEM number 0386834 of the piece I need to replace.

I ordered the fuel pump and carb rebuild kit. Should be here in a few days. Once it arrives. I'll probably be back for tips :)

Basically, I'll work slow, plenty of light, the manual and take pictures along the way. I should have the motor back on the water in no time!

yep. the fuel pump is simple, and the carb is one of the simplest. then see Joe Reeves Carb settings in the engine faq forum.

So I completed the carb rebuild and replaced the fuel pump - the motor still won't idle, it starts ok.

Any other ideas?

My first idea is that you missed something in the carb. Did you remove the core plug and inspect the tiny idle holes beneath it? Also, I've seen more than a few of those carbs with the tippy-tip of the slow speed needle twisted off and jammed in the seat.

And there is always the possibility that it isn't a carb problem at all. Has the motor ever been overheated? Are the main bearings worn?

Not sure on if it's ever been over heated, got the motor from my dad and he hadn't used it in several years.

The carb looked good. I'll see if someone local will take a look at it.

Thanks for the suggestions!
