I have a 7.4 Bravo Gen V. When changing carb, i noticed that the starboard side of the intake (where the ribs are) looks like it is starting to rust. The port side looks perfect.

I was thinking it Could be rust, was also thinking that the carb might have been leaking fuel and what looks like rust may be gunk from gas dripping when sitting. I forgot my camera so do not have a picture and i put the new carb on.

I have two questions. Do you think an intake could rust at the ribs right under carb? Or could be gunk from fuel.
And lastly if it is rust, could I replace with a gen v mag intake? I thought the ports are different on mag vs bravo. But I'm out of my league on ports! I can't find a used bravo intake and new one is over 600 bucks. There seems to be a few mag intakes for 150 on eBay. The boat is a 96 and if the mag intake would work it would be great to save the money.

Thanks for the help!

Re: 7.4 Bravo Intake Manifold

I have the 7.4 Bravo but it is the Mark IV engine, not the Gen 5. Anyway . . . I too have rust in the intake ports and it has hydro-locked the engine. My issue was on the port side where the intake plenum is lower. Anyway, where there is rust, there is water. So, you should check the manifold more carefully to see if it is leaking water from the cooling duct, or some such thing.

As for the ports . . . I assume that you have the oval ports, not the rectangular ports (Magnum engine have rectangular)

This might be what you are looking for: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-14097092/ You should check the compatibility for the Gen V .

I do not think that the rectangular intake manifold going into the oval port cylinder head will give you good results. Kind of like the rectangular peg trying to fit in the oval hole.

Ted,

Thank you. I will check out this manifold and find the water leak. Good luck with your engine!
