I've read a number of archived posts on Volvo Penta fuel pump problems with many different thoughts and problems. Recently was stranded and towed after failure at cruise speed. Local shop replaced pump, after checking for water in fuel and fuel pump electrical.

New pump was quiet for about first 8 engine hours, then whine began again, and it gets really hot. is this a sign of impending failure? -OR- Can i do anything to fix a problem, or is it a failed pump to be replaced again? -OR- is this just a normal thing with these pumps.

Also, it seems to occur at idle up to about 1100 rpms, then calms down, or makes intermittent noise.

Engine is 1997 7.4PLKD

Thanks for thoughts!

Update--cruised yesterday at 3000 rpms for extended time. Upon stopping, immediately checked pump cool to touch. Repeated several times. At idle pump whine begins like starved for fuel--winds up, then stops momentarily before repeating, starting at low pitch and getting higher. Pump gets very hot to touch as does metal fuel line to carb. Then cools down at higher rpms.

I tightened hoses from tank to pump in case of air leak. Dumped fuel from filter to check for water, relubed seal, filled with gas to prime, tightened. Checked draw on fuel line from anti-siphon. Takes pressure to overcome but doesn't seem difficult.

I am thinking maybe it is anti-siphon though, since higher rpms would not cure symptoms of restriction elsewhere (like at fuel tank uptake screen, in fuel filter, or in pump itself).

Is this thought correct? Does the pump draw fuel with more, steady force at high rpms so that a sticky anti-siphon would be overcome then, but not at low rpms?

Experiencing some of the same issues with fuel pump, so I am interested in how this plays out - check prices for new fuel pump and they are not cheap. I am on same 7.4 but a few years newer (2000) but I am assuming same thing. What type boat is this in? Here I have 2000 Larson 33 with twin 7.4's
