7.4 Mercruiser Starter Bolt Broken - Straight Bolt Pattern Starter Work Around?

I have a 1998 Maxum 2800 SCR with a single 7.4 Mercruiser Bravo 3. Last weekend, the starter stopped turning the engine over and was just engaging and spinning. After inspection, it was noticed that that starter was loose. I tightened up the first bolt and moved onto the second, which was not there and in the bilge. I retrieved it and saw that the bolt was broken. There is no part of the bolt in the block that can be grabbed. I understand that the true fix for this is to pull the engine and drill it out, and replace, BUT....

The block is drilled with three holes, where it appears that I can use a straight across bolt pattern starter motor. My question is has anyone ever replaced a staggered bolt pattern starter with a straight across pattern starter. Any thoughts on this idea?

Welcome aboard! I believe the bolt patterns are for different sized flywheels. So short answer - no.

Correct, that is what I have been noticing. The straight across bolt pattern is for 87' and prior. The stagger is for late model. Also have noticed the flywheel difference. Thanks for the quick response and welcome message.
