I have a 99 Volvo model (7.4Gi PWTR, ser#4110174629) DP, that I am having fuel pump problems with. The boat died and would not start, I found that the fuel pump breaker was tripped. Reset and it ran fine for a short time. I noticed the fuel pump was very warm - hot to touch at this point, later running it at idle I heard the dreaded whining noise and it quit again for good and I fiquired the low pressure fuel pump was bad. Replaced it and the boat started up and idled great but the new fuel pump was again very hot. Is it normal for this pump to be too hot to touch? I will check with a infrared thermometer tomorrow but I'm guessing 120 degrees or more after running at idle for 10 minutes. I don't want to ruin this new fuel pump running it if something else is causing this problem.
I did the basics - changed the fuel filter (which I do yearly very few hrs it had no water and relatively clean, antisiphon valve removed 2 yrs ago, no vent line clog.)
Thanks.
*** I ran the boat yesterday(8/7) with the new fuel pump and it heated up to 139 deg. I can hear this one whining while the engine cowl is down even when running 25mph. Not the loud whine the original made before it failed but I never heard this noise before replacing it. I had a Volvo Penta shop nearby tell me that they checked with "volvo" and that the fuel pump is normal being this hot.***
