I have a 99 Volvo model (7.4Gi PWTR, ser#4110174629) DP, that I am having fuel pump problems with. The boat died and would not start, I found that the fuel pump breaker was tripped. Reset and it ran fine for a short time. I noticed the fuel pump was very warm - hot to touch at this point, later running it at idle I heard the dreaded whining noise and it quit again for good and I fiquired the low pressure fuel pump was bad. Replaced it and the boat started up and idled great but the new fuel pump was again very hot. Is it normal for this pump to be too hot to touch? I will check with a infrared thermometer tomorrow but I'm guessing 120 degrees or more after running at idle for 10 minutes. I don't want to ruin this new fuel pump running it if something else is causing this problem.
I did the basics - changed the fuel filter (which I do yearly very few hrs it had no water and relatively clean, antisiphon valve removed 2 yrs ago, no vent line clog.)
Thanks.

*** I ran the boat yesterday(8/7) with the new fuel pump and it heated up to 139 deg. I can hear this one whining while the engine cowl is down even when running 25mph. Not the loud whine the original made before it failed but I never heard this noise before replacing it. I had a Volvo Penta shop nearby tell me that they checked with "volvo" and that the fuel pump is normal being this hot.***

(curious why no replies)

Personally, I didn't reply because I have no idea what temps those pumps run at, or what is to hot. Obviously neither did your dealer, but he was able to call Volvo (something I can't do) to find the answer.
When I worked for a VP dealership, I frequently called Volvo tech for things that were not in manual or covered in tech schools.

My question is - is 139 deg cosidered normal operating temp? If not what may be causing the whine noise and it to be this hot?
Thanks for any help.

Like I said in the previous reply, no idea about the temp thing.

Abnormal whining noises are normally due to air.

PS: Do not repost the same thing twice. You could have added the above statement about the temp and whine to your original post.
I merged the two threads together.

I also don't answer questions if I don't know the answer.

Good luck with your repair. I don't have repair advise to offer, but at least you got Don S. to reply that he needs more info to give an answer and he did go thru the trouble of listing every 8.1. Getting his attention is half the battle, apparently he didn't like something about my post Saturday on a fuel pump failure and possible overheating.

And I REALLY dislike being bullied into answering questions or having to answer why I didn't answer a particular question.
