The motor is a 7.5 kicker. circa late 60 to mid 70's.

I need help. I went to change my impeller, only to find my motor is a combo of several different motors. I was able to get everything back together, but I am having problems with the gears shifting.

The shift shaft has teeth around the top. There is a circular colar about an inch down the teeth. The teeth then continue for another quater of an inch. There is also a flat section that run down the shift shaft where the teeth are. I know the the flat spot indicates where to find forward, nuetral and reverse. Foward would be at 6 o'clock, nuetral would be between 4 and 5 o'clock and reverse would be at 3 o'clock if you where looking at the shift shaft from behind the propeller. I also noticed that the shift shaft slides up and down about one half inch.

When I first conected the lower unit to the exhaust unit the gears did not function properly. They worked in reverse, nuetral and forward. However when I shifted through them the second time nuetral gear acted the same as forward and reverse gear acted like neutral gear except there was a clicking when the propeller spun freely. Forward gear acted like foward gear.

Now the shift shaft only will rotate between nuetral and foward. It does not want to shift into reverse. It also take alittle effort to turn the gear from forward to nuetral.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I bought a manual but it doesn't cover what cause problems. It looks like I might need to open the propeller shaft where the gears are located. If so do you need special tools and is it a complicated procedure?
Thanks Chris
