I have an older 7.5 Mercury(S/N 5618773, don't know the year). It remains locked in netural until brute force is used to break it free. Working the shifter back in forth will loosen but left overnight it will lock up again. Is the problem linkage or a worn part somewhere? Thanks

Thanks for the input Yepblaze. The shifter is lever type and I'll check the fluid levels and advise.

Resolved the problem. The shift lever is attached to a square shaft with what appears to be a cam or operating fork on the other end. With a box wrench on the shaft it was possible to rotate the shaft (very difficult). The embarrassing solution was a spray of WD40 at the interface of the sliding surfaces. I'll use a better lube when next at the boat

I'm not sure.

Is it twist shift? Or does it have a lever?

Check the oil in the lower unit and let us know what comes out.

You'll have to remove the plug screw in the very bottom and one up near the horizontal thing so it'll drain/vent.
