I have read all of the previous posts that I could find on this subject and have a few questions.
My 7.5 Merc is (Serial # 6467074) unknown year, possibly early 80's. Uncle had the the water pump rebuilt, took it out on the river, ran it for less than 15 minutes and the motor stopped running. It sat in his barn for 2 years, I just got it. Cleaned it up. Started in 2 pulls. Notices automatically, no water from the tell-tale. I looked into it more closely, water and air both run freely from the intake, flush plug, and tell-tale hole. Took off the lower unit to see the water pump. pump is in good shape with no scoring anywhere. The impeller is also in good shape, no scoring, tears, and the rubber is pliable. All of the seals appear in good shape to. Anybody have any ideas. Do I need to replace the entire pump again? Replace the impeller with only 15 minutes on it? Any secrets I am missing?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Re: 7.5 Merc water pump problems

Yeah, I though about that too, but even after I reassembled it, with the water pipe definately in place, it still does not work. Is there a way to check the pump without putting the entire lower unit back on. If I could do this, then maybe I could eliminate that it is the pump and then move on to finding a potential blockage somewhere.
Also, I have read alot about this "grommet" thing near the powerhead that seems critical to this outboard. Are there any obvious signs taht the grommet is bad? Anybody have details on replacement?

Thanks
