Hi there, i purchased a 1985brownband merc last week that hadn't been run for 6 years but in pretty mint condition so replaced impeller coz that was knackered and had the gearbox oil replaced. I took it for test run today and it pumps water fine, but is very slow on water, way slower than my mariner 5hp. It seems to rev up very high in nuetral but in gear the revs dont go that high?

I also tried it with one ht lead off and it went the same speed and then i tried it with the other one off and the other one re-connected and it still goes the same speed as with both connected. i also tried manually operating the throttle on the carb just incase the cable wasnt adjusted properly but that was ok. Everything on the engine looks cleans and untouched and i'm completely racking my brains as to what this could be, any suggestions? cheer

still trying to figure out what is wrong with the engine, i've just been reading about spun props. i didnt realise this could happen, i assumed the prop was directly bolted onto a splined shaft? could this be a possibility? the engine does push my boat at a steady and constant speed, just very slowly.

Thinking about it, it does make sense as it does scream up and rev high like it should in nuetral when operating the throttle by hand on the carb but when in gear it bogs down and doesnt seem to get anywhere. it doesnt seem to be an ignition or fuel problem because it doesnt stall at full throttle or anything above the shift position, we had it running half hour solid, although it does stall when throttle twisted back to zero
