Need to pull off the bottom half (skeg) off the the lower gear unit. Old type propeller. Removed the prop shaft and 1 gear; Question how that skeg comes off. Are there some small drift pins that hold that unit together? Any help is appreciated!

Is your gear case the two piece style? if so it should have allen screws holding it together, if its the one piece style you can't remove it, all you can do is pull the gears out of the rear of the housing. welcome to the post.

Thks for the reply. It's the 1-piece and I have it disassembled. Anything special I should know regarding those electric clutches? Incidently, the boat & motor are out of Romer Marine in OK.

well all that is electric in there is the solonoids all the rest is mechanical, the clutchs are a spring loaded dog style, it's been a long time since i messed with on but if i remember right there is large plates treaded into the housing with spring keepers and everything slides right out the back of the housing, why are you tearing it down? Was it not working or are you just curious?

The 40 hp electric shifts did have a two piece gear case. It was held together by two studs. I'm pretty sure you have to separate them in order to get the forward gear/spring, hub, electromagnet, and forward bearing out. Quite often the nuts seize on the studs, requiring them to be sawed thru. This involves sawing thru the housing, front and rear, about an inch above the bullet. The cuts will be about an inch or so deep and can be welded. About the Eletric clutches, Front hub is knurled and the rear is not. Resistance of the coils I beleive is about 6 to 8 ohms. If a spring needs to be replaced make sue to use locktite on the setscrews

Answer is both; not working (wire shorted) and also curious. This motor is new to me and I wanted to do complete inspection before I started buying parts. This motor was part of a set...the other had a hole in the block, but this one seems a good candidate to rebuild during the winter. Thanks again to both of you for the info.

By the way, Romer Marine was a decal on the motor and accompanying boat. I know nothing about them.
