I spoke to a marine mechanic at the boat store. He told me that with my symptoms (cranks but won't start) that it could be one of two problems. 1. Being electrical, but I have spark. 2. Being Fuel, he advised me that I should clean the carbs, to do this I should pull the whole thing apart. Now, I have noticed that I have a bad gasket on the intake. Could the bad gasket cause the motor not to start? What precautions do I need to take when pulling the carb apart and what needs to be done putting it back together? Is there any synchronization or adjustments to be made? Any help on these topics is greatly appreciated.

Re: 70 HP Evinrude 1978 won't start

Hi, Dusle.

There is not "a" carb. There are three of them. If none of your three cylinders is firing it is more likely that you are not getting fuel to the carbs.

Put some premix in a spray bottle and spray it into the carbs while trying to start. If it pops, chugs, or tries to fire up your problem is getting fuel into the carbs.

If that doesn't help, get back to us with some history on the engine. :)

JB,

Thanks for getting back to me. I will spray a premix into the three carbs, hopefully that gets her started up. If it does, do you reccomend I clean the carbs out? Also, I should tell you that I have posted another topic on the same subject. I am new to this board and didn't realize that I could continue posting to the same topic. Please come join in on the other post as it will be easier to follow just the one. It is titled "78 Evinrude 70HP cranks but won't start" Thanks again for your help!
