Hello everyone. I know there are lots of experienced outboard people on here, hopefully someone can help on this one. This is a '77, 70hp evinrude. When accelerating the engine bogs, if you hit the choke it will pick up and go (which tells me it's running lean). The guy who has worked on it has cleaned the carburetors, set the floats, checked the compression (100psi on all 3), cleaned the fuel tank, replaced the fuel lines including the bulb, cleaned the filter screen, rebuilt the fuel pump, and installed new spark plugs. After all of this it still does the same thing. Now he is saying that it is sucking air around the butterfly shafts on the carburetors, before i buy carburetors i thought i'd post on here to get some ideas. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Is everyone stumped on this one? Can a loose fitting butterfly shaft cause an engine to suck too much air and run this way?

I have tried twice to reply and for some reason it didn't get through. I would suspect that he missed some stuff in the high speed jet. Your float should be set so it is level with the carb when turned upside down.

your high speed jets could be to small and running it like that could burn your engine up i had a 70 hp and i had the same problem and it was the high speed jets had to small of a hole for the altitude

I appreciate the replies. We took the boat out today to try again and it got on plane after hitting the choke while it was bogging, then it started surging so i think he missed something on the fuel pump. Squeezing the bubble would clear it up so I think I'll rebuild it myself this time. Thanks again for your help.
