This is my first boat and I purchased it a little while ago. We tried to start it up but it bogs down, like it was not letting the compression out. We did a test a took one of the spark plugs off and the motor started to tuen freely without any issues. Could it be that exhuast is plugged? And where is it located.

Help

Welcome aboard hobbit!

Likely you have fuel flow issues...or maybe dirty carbs. Did you try pushing the key in to choke when it bogged? A good test is to take some premix in a spary bottle with you. When the engine starts to bog, spray some premix into the carb throats. If the engine picks up, fuel flow problem.

Before starting, did you pump the primer bulb up snug? Do you notice any fuel laying around the lower pan possibly caused by a fuel leak?

Another thing to look at is spark. You should get a hot lighting like spark at each cylinder and it should jump a 1/2" gap.

Sounds like the compression is good. To make sure, do a compression test on each hole. Readings should be 10 >15% of each other.

If you have access to a service manual, check the link and sync. This times the throttle plate opening with the spark advance and also gets you to check that the throttle plates are in sync and open and close at the same time.

Take your time with it. If unsure, go to the local library. Most carry generic service manuals like Seloc or Clymers. Sometimes hard to digest and cypher out but useful in performing tests.

And you can always post her if you have more questions.

Well it got warm again so I started to work again on the motor. I purchased a new battery to make sure I got good voltage since the old one was failing. Yet still would not start up, checked the fuel lines and saw nothing but them I look on the other side of the motor and saw an orange lever. I moved it and had a drop of fuel. I then tried to start up teh motor and WOW it started. You got to forgive me I am new to this and found out it was a kill switch. What drew me was the person who sold me the boat had spent some money replacing parts and did not see this. Now I can take it out on the water.
