This is the first time I have done a water pump on my 1974 70Hp Evinrude. I have a J-E complete OEM kit. It came with a full face gasket. When I pulled the old pump out there was no gasket.

Do I use it? Does it go below the wear plate? Should it go on dry or with a sealant?

There is an O-ring at the base of the pump housing so that and some sealant is what I?m thinking for that surface. I have used Permatex #2 in the past on a 10Hp.

Any thoughts for this novice? I have the new impeller, new wear ring and new top plate all back in the new housing and ready to reassemble.

Yes. Yes. With sealant.
I guess, the gasket is added to prevent corrosion of the aluminum parts due to direct contact to the sst wear plate.

The o-ring needs some sticky stuff on it so it doesn't fall off during assembly.

Well this must be too basic a question............I think I clean the old surface, use the gasket, coat both sides with a thin layer of OMC gasket sealing compound or Permatex Aviation. I dont have the OMC and my dealer is an hour away.

Comments?

I use blue Hylomar sealant for the gasket (both sides) as well as for "glueing" the special-shaped O-ring. The original OMC chemicals are very hard to get here in Germany. At least for ordinary mortals.

Thanks Werner. Use of the gasket makes sense although as I said the shop did not use one a few years ago when they did the work. I did a lot of iboats searching and decided to go with the Aviation from NAPA for $5.
