I just bought a used early '70's 70hp Johnson motor. I dont know much about outboards, but I can do some maintenance. I want to learn to do my own routine stuff. What reference book should I get? What are the first things I should do?

Howdy, yeabs.

First: Post the model number so we can ID the year model.

Next: Buy an OEM Service Manual and study it like graduation depends on it.

Then: Post any questions you have left here.

Good luck. :)

Since you apparently know nothing about the condition of the engine at this point, here are a few things to start with: 1) compression check, 2) do a spark check on all cylinders 3) replace water pump, 4) replace thermostat, 5) check plug wire condition, 6) rebuild the carbs and fuel pump using new kits. When finished, add a fresh fuel/oil mix and fire it off (on muffs or in the lake). Never run the engine without a source of water or you'll fry the new water pump in seconds. All of the test will be explained in detail in the service manual. Make sure you get a manual specific to your engine.
