70 hp Mercury Stator problem

I recently replaced the stator and trigger assembly with new parts from Sierra. Motor is 1981 70 HP 3 cyl. Wires for both parts were severly corroded. Motor did run though before the replacement. The new stator I bought had one extra black wire (ground??). I rechecked the part number, called Sierra and was told by an engineer it was the right part. The new stator did not install like the old one. Had to rotate it 180 degrees because the wires on the new stator were much shorter than the old. Also decided to ground the extra black wire. I was careful when putting the flywheel back on to keep the same orientation it had before it was taken off so I'm pretty sure the timing is close. The bottom line is that I am getting NO spark from any cylinder. I can turn the engine over so I know I have power going to the starter terminals. I rechecked the wiring and believe I have the right color wires on the right terminal. Can't figure out what the extra stator wire is for or if it is important or if the 180 degree rotation is bad. Any ideas?

Are you sure all the wires on the motor are hooked up?
Are the red and blue stator wires on the right posts on the switchbox?
Are you sure the extra ground wire on the new stator is getting a good ground? (Your original stator grounded through its body/mount bolts)
Are you sure the kill circuit wiring isn't grounding out somewhere? (I believe on 1981 that circuit will be the yellow/black wiring, pre-1980 is orange)
Did you resistance check the new stator? (never know, could be bad out of the box)

The 180-degree rotation of the stator should not be an issue; all it does is make juice, it doesn't affect timing.

ok, hate to admit this, but the lanyard wasn't in. Had just finished trouble shooting a ground issue with the starter, so overlooked the obvious. Thanks for the input. Should have stepped away for a while and come back. All is well so that's what's important.
