Re: 70 hp Mercury won't start

I've checked out all leads going to the coils, its strange, all 6 leads have a negative charge. I disconnected the kill switch wire from the switch box, still no fire; I've reversed the red and blue wires leading into the switch box to test the lower stator, still nothing. Any suggestions??

FarmTruck:

Sorry I don't have any good advice for you - I'm not very good on the electrical side of things. You haven't mentioned whether you've checked the stator or not - did you?

Also, I would suggest that you post a new topic if you don't get some more answers today and restate your problem and mention everything you have tried. A lot of the experts here will see that you've had 5 replies now and might not even look at your question (they will assume one of us helped you get it fixed!).

Good luck!

Does this motor have remote controls?

If it does, try this.

Disconnect the harness that goes to the dashboard and then attempt to start the engine by jumping the starter celiniod.

If engine starts, the problem is on the dash board, ie...ignition switch, nuetral safety switch, or stop lanyard.

To stop the engine, make sure that the key is off position, and reconnect the harness.

Kenny

Check for continuity. Your stator could possibly be one in about 5 parts that has gone bad. Its hard to just say to check for continuity, you need a shop manual to give you perfect troubleshooting guids.
If you have a swichbox, that could be burned up. Then again it can be your coil pack. You can take any coil pack to auto zone and they will test it for free.
Do double check all ground connections throughout your engine. 1 broke wire can mess everything up.
