Temitch,Not clear on exactly which audible alarm you are experiencing or the particular year model in question. There were some changes to the VRO alarm circuit in the 90's and differing year models don't have the same alarms.I own a 95 70 hp Rude so I will give you the alarm schedule on mine and see if someone can help you pinpoint your problem.Post the model number of your motor and someone will be able to tell you the exact year.Alarms on the 95 70 are as follows:

* one short tone when key is turned on signifies that alarm system is operational
*continuous alarm and engine will not operate above mid speed signifies overheat
*one short tone every 40 sec signifies low oil level in reservoir
*rapid short tones signifies no oil through VRO
*continuous tone and engine operates at or near max speed indicates fuel restriction alarm from VRO

Determine from this alarm schedule which alarm you are experiencing and someone will be able to assist.

The model# (year/hp) are needed for correct info. OMC used two differant timers on the oil tank pick-ups and that was pre-system check which came out in '95 on the 70 hp. The initial self test is built into the warning horn itself and should only sound for about 1 second when key is turned on. A quik test is to ground the temp switch lead (brown wire, cylinder head) with the key on. The horn should activate everytime you ground the lead. Beyond this the troubleshooting becomes more complicated.

When it comes on with the turn of the key how do you make it go off. I think you have a sensor wire grounding out..

temitch,
Disconnect the wires at your vro reservoir and see if it stops. I'm betting you have a bad sensor in the tank.

the model is j70tlerv,dont know year. the oiler is vro2. alarm goes on at first turn of key and will sometimes stay on til you shut off motor, sometimes when you are going at any speed it will come on and stay on.if you turn key to first stop and the alarm is on,then shut it off, then turn it on til alarm stops---this may be anywhere from 3 to 10 times, coulod it be key switch?

Mitch, The year of your motor is 1994, it is in the model code, "ER"=94. That is pre-system check and has three things that will trip the horn. The sensor at the cylinder head, oil tank, and the VRO unit itself. By process of elimination you can track down where the trouble is and troubleshoot that componant. The oil tank connects to the system near the VRO inside the motor pan with quick disconnects. Also make sure battery connections are clean and tight. The system will reset everytime voltage drops.

Temitch,

Master Tech makes a good point about battery connections.

I do not like wing nuts on batteries. A good hex nut and lock washer are the preferred method.

Temitch.... The warning horn on your engine is an electronic horn, not a mechanical horn. They are prone to one certain failure whereas they will give a false warning. This failure results in having the horn engage as soon as power (12v) is applied when one turns the ignition key to the on position.

The cure is to simply replace the horn.

However, if for some reason you have replaced the horn, then suddenly encountered this problem, there is a good possibility that you have installed the push on electricial connectors backwards. If so, reverse the connections.

Joe...would a reasonable test for these electronic horns be to disconnect all alarm inputs to the horn and turn the key on? You would still get the test beep but after that it should stay quiet. I've changed several over the years and as usual, you don't think of a question like this until you see a post on it.

Thanks...OBJim

Jim..... That's worth a try just to see what happens. If the horn is accessable, just remove the tan wire from it to eliminate the alarm systems. Let us know what you find.
