'70 Johnson lower unit

i finally found out what is wrong or at least what i think is wrong w/ my 25 hp johnson

i completely tore apart my gearcase & my lower unit & found that the drive shaft where the pinion gear is was broken or at least i think, the spline for the pinion gear was not connected to the driveshaft, it looked too clean of a cut to be broken, but the pinion gear was not spinning but when i took it off the driveshft was spinning so im not completely sure what is going on,
