70el 78c johnson charging battery

well, new here, away from boats for near 18 years, but i am back. just stole a boat,:) 15 ft glastron tri hull, 70 hp johnson, on a trailer for 300.00 does this engine recharge the battery when its running?

Welcome to iboats and yes it has a 6 amp charging system.

And you can check it out with a voltmeter connected to the battery.

Fully charged you should see something like 12.7 volts. As you crank the engine it will fall possibly to 10 or less but as the battery recharges the volts will rise again and continue to rise above the original figure. Its not a regulated charging circuit so the volts could well rise to 16 or even higher.

If you do not see the volts rise above the original figure then suspect the rectifier ... they are fried instantly if the battery is connected with the polarity reversed .. easily done.

Thanks all that replied. We hooked up fuel & battery along with water hose and it started up after a few minutes of priming. [ think the floats in carbs were stuck} It runs well so now its time to start working on minor things like air intake gaskets.
I checked the lower unit and will need new seals as the gear oil is milky color. will do a water pump at that time also.

Don't jump into a full lower unit seal job just yet. Change the oil and replace the fill and vent screw gaskets and run it around for a bit and then re-check. Those little gaskets are very often the culprit.

thanks, ill do that. sure would be nice if the fix was that easy. fer sure , its not leaking oil anywhere.
