I have a 1975 johnson 70hp prop (70 esl75 b) and from what I've gathered it is a saltwater model. What does that mean to me? Will it hurt running it on fresh water? Where does the water come out? Im new to marine engines but I've been running mainly jets for about 12 years. What all should i check before I run this motor it has set for a Lil while but i did have it running last year till the Carb gaskets started leaking. Any info on this motor would be greatly appreciated. There's so many different styles of his engine.

For starters, it will love you for running in fresh water. Most people who run in the salt try to flush the motors with fresh water whenever they can.
There are infinitely more qualified to answer the rest but I would at the very least check the lower unit for moisture. Loosen the drain plug and if it's pure oil, it should be fine. Any milky substance is cause for alarm.
I will leave the remainder up the the local pros.

Not sure they made a 'saltwater series' back in '75 but I guess anything's possible. Just meant you got a better grade of fastener, more corrosion resistant paint on the inside'n outside, etc.

Reasonably sure you won't hurt it by running in freshwater ... Like BH said it'll probly breath a sigh of relief & say thank you. Heh heh

As mentioned check the level & condition of gearcase lube. When you're replaceing the leaky carb gasket(s) think I'd go ahead'n go through the carbs. Yer gonna have em off anyway?

Might wanna inspect the wiring, check/clean connections and grounds in particular.

'Sides that there ain't a whole lot to those motors. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, its greatly appreciated. I've been trying to do more research on the motor. The carbs i plan on rebuilding completly because when i bought it one bowl had a hole in it and the rest were beat to death. Guess the floats were sticking. Be replaced the fuel lines and checked the plugs and all the wiring. Boat ran great till the fuel leak. I was told the water comes out of the exhaust on this style. I can't seem to find a weep hole anywhere. Im gonna get a service manual so that should tell me a lot more about the motor. Which manual is gonna help me more a clymer or is there a better book? Also if anyone knows about trim pumps i have some questions on that. Thanks guys.

I think that motor predates the tell-tale (is that what you meant by weep hole?) and you have water out the prop exhaust and also out two holes just below the cowl. The tell-tale has no part of the cooling function; it is only there to show that the pump is working. I suppose you could add one with a threaded hole drilled in the water jacket but I wouldn't.

All johnsons are salt-water motors--which means they handle either salt or fresh. You do, however, want annodes made of different metals for fresh or salt; that's the only difference.

Replace the water pump impeller first thing.

Although not a recommended standard proceedure, you can verify that the pump is working by removing the thermostat then watch to see if water splorts all over the place out the hole. Also, running on muffs often doesn't get the water all the way up like a subnmerged LU does.

I agree on checking the grounds--remove, clean, dialectric grease, reinstall.

I've got the carbs almost completely new looking with a full rebuild kit. Just hope i can figure out this synchronizing thing. Have to find a service manual. As far as it ever being in salt water i don't think it has i just seen that it was a saltwater model. The boat came from Arkansas. I will check that water pump.
