hi, I just bought a bayliner with a 70Hp 1995 Force, I knew it didn't run, so I don't blame the other owner, I cleaned the carburetor, and when I try to start it will turn fine but wont start, some times it spit smoke by the exhaust, ones I release the key it try to start but it turns backward in a different direction of the starter like one or two spin, it even fires up , but then stop...it has spark in the three cylinders, and compression is 120psi per cylinder also..any idea, never sow something like this..thanks

Firing order is 1, 2, 3, with top cylinder as #1. Check that the coils and wires are attached correctly so that the proper cylinder fires in the correct order. Incorrect firing order can cause your problems.

Then check the timing. Timing too advanced can cause backfiring and momentary reverse operation. Timing should be 28-30 degrees before top dead center at wide open throttle. If correctly set, idle timing should be somewhere around -2 to +2 degrees--it varies from engine to engine. IMPORTANT setting is wide open throttle, 28-30 degrees.

I will check the wiring tomorrow , but I can't check the timing because it doesn't run

You can still check the timing statically if it has spark. Just open the throttle to wide open and crank it with the plugs removed and grounded and the timing light attached. You should see the correct timing marks. Not sure if it is the same as older engines but cranking should be at 28 which advances to 30 when running

Ok I found that the wires that come from the stator to the coils were misplaced, the 3 was on 1, the 2 on 3, and the 1on2, now it fires right up and runs fine..thanks for the idea
