I have an older 70hp evinrude on a 17.5 springbok. It ran fine for the first 2 years I've had it and now it turns over but it won't start. I've changed the spark plugs, new fuel, and sprayed the carbs. It hasn't been running the greatest this year but this is the first time I can't get it to go. Not sure on how old the motor and boat is but I'm figuring around early 80's

What's the model number of that engine? We need this to determine exactly what engine you have.

Check compression..... what are the readings?

Check spark with the spark plugs removed. Do you have spark that will jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!?

If not, remove the black/yellow wire from the ignition switch or the powerpack, whichever is easiest.... do you have spark now? if you do, replace the ignition switch...... If not, the usual cause is a failed powerpack.

There are a couple things to check, the first is the compression on both cylinders, the next thing is the ignition. Use an open air gap tester for that. If the compression is good (reasonably equal) and the ignition is good (bright blue spark 7/16") then the carbs would be next. re-build kits are available at Iboats and are not difficult to do yourself. Post the model number and we can tell what year it is from that.

ok...we got it started by cupping the carbs with our hands so it looks like a choke problem. Any suggestions?

How did it run after it started? If badly you will need to clean out the carbs/ jets.
Whats the choke set up- manual covering plates/butterflys or solenoid plunger?
