I have a 1989 70TLCEM with fixed jet carbs, found a set of 1984 70hp carbs with adjustable jets for cheap. Will these work on my 1989 with no preformance loss? My carbs need a rebuild as I am sure the 84's do also.

Yes, they'll work just fine but why not just clean yours?

I wonder how bad your motor idles. I have a J60TLCEA which is in fact the same engine except for the carbs. The 60hp carbs do have adjustable slow speed needles. Idle is stable but not really smooth. Anything else than idle (acceleration, hole shot, mid rpm, wot) is perfect. My two-cylinder 1996 15hp crossflow scavenger idles better than the 60hp looper.
