Hello. This is my first post so hope i don't sound like a boat noob. I just acquired my first boat from my parents. It has been in the family for 15 years and i decided to finally do something with it. My big question is what prop? It is a 1975 70HP Evinrude re worked to a 75HP with a 5500 WOT to my understanding. The boat is a 1975 Starcraft trihull It currently has a 10" pitch prop(for pontoons). Want to go with either a 17" or 19". What are your recommendations? Engine runs super strong and am changing out water pump and plugs. So i should not have any problems from the engine. Thanks! Matt

Start with the 17 which would do well overall especially when the boat is more heavily loaded.

Ok thank you. Will do. I figure it should up my speed a bit from the 10" pitch as well correct?

Hi Matt,
Most definitely will see a speed increase. Presently you're driving around in first gear - engine is revving up but you're not going anywhere fast. Going to the 17 will be like going into 3rd gear. You'll see a big difference.
How was the motor reworked to a 75? The only way that is possible is if you use a 75hp powerhead as the differences are internal - not just carburetors...

Thats great about the speed! Before i ran about 30mph. Am hoping for atleast a 5mph increase. I am not sure what modifications were done but i am basing it on what my father told me. Guess the only way to tell would be to Dyno it huh?

Re: 70HP Evinrude

I HAD a 19 pitch on my 70 hp evinrude, and it was too much pitch. the boat could barley get on plane, and ran at 4100 rpm.
the 17 got it up to 4800. 15 had it up to 5500.
buy my boat may be a little heavier. it is a 1979 runabout. weighs about 2200 lbs. I would suggest the 17. you don't want to have to struggle to get up on plane.

Re: 70HP Evinrude

you can buy and sell props on ebay.
so buy one, or 2. and sell the one you don't like.
it is not a bad idea to have a spare prop anyway.
i have bought 2 extra props, all different pitches, and sold my original 19 pitch on ebay. they all get around 50 bucks.

If the motor is turning @5500 rpm WOT Then you have the right prop on it now!
If not then I would say that the 17 would be just right....

Its currently running under 5500. 5500 is the optimal WOT for my motor, is what i meant. I think i am going with the 17 for sure after all the great replies and help. Thanks everyone!

Re: 70HP Evinrude

i want to start some sort of prop exchange website.
where you can post what prop you have, and exchange it with other people who want to try out other props.
you just trade with someone else, and see how you like it.

Too bad i'm in NC too.I have a SS 17 that would fit it.
Also looking to trade a 19 for a 17 on my V-6 Johnny...
The prop trade club is a good idea....;)
It would have to be done through PM'ing each other because of the forum rules.

Re: 70HP Evinrude

Propeller pitch is the theoretical forward movement of a propeller for one revolution, assuming that there is no prop slip. For example, a 21 pitch propeller will theoretically move 21 inches for every revolution. Propeller slip occurs with every propeller, but the amount of slip varies depending on propeller design. More aggressively and efficiently designed propellers will slip less.

When selecting a propeller pitch for your boat, it is important that the propeller runs at the upper end of your engines wide-open-throttle RPM range. If you want your RPM's to increase, go down in pitch. To decrease RPM's, go up in pitch. As a general guide, for every 2" of pitch, RPM's will change approximately 400 RPM's.

For water sports or extra people on board, you should generally drop 2" of pitch to help compensate for the added weight and drag on your boat. It makes a noticeable difference in your boat's hole shot, fuel efficiency, RPM's, and overall performance. You should ALWAYS carry a spare propeller on board, and if you're into water sports or occasionally load the boat with extra people, a spare prop with a lesser pitch is a good idea. When thinking a propeller pitch, compare it to a gear on car - lower gear, higher RPM's.

The same pitch from different manufacturers will run slightly different RPM's due to a difference in blade design. Speed differences among the same pitch from various manufacturers will vary even more. For example a 17 pitch from one brand could run up to 7 mph faster than a 17 pitch from another brand.

Pitch is the 2nd two digits that are listed in a propeller item description (14-1/4 x 19, 19 is the pitch, 14-1/4 is the diameter)

Re: 70HP Evinrude

i might start a yahoo group or something, or get a free website where you can post what type or prob you want, and what type you want to get rid of.
they you just look for a match on the other end. all you pay is shipping, but i guess there is a bit or a trust issue.
