Past weekend I had my boat out - ran well for a couple hours other than wanting to kill everytime I put it in gear. Usually took 5 or 6 tries to get it going. Heading back to shore wide open and it was like I hit a wall. Lost power and had to feather it back to shore. Pulled plugs last night and #1 plug had aluminum spatter on it. YIKES! I did a compression test and had the following:
Cyl 1 had 100
Cyl 2 had 110
Cyl 3 had 100
Is it possible that I did not ruin the engine?
I know I need to find out why it leaned out so bad on #1. I suspect that I overheated due to a failed impeller. This engine is a 1978 and not worth spending a lot of money on. Do you think since my compression appears to be good that I can get by with fixing the cooliing problem and run it? Or am I going to HAVE to tear the power head down.
Thought anyone?

Suggest fixing the leaning out and cooling problems which would, hopefully, make it pick up the load when going into gear, then give it a chance with plenty of oil. Wouldn't go into powerhead yet with those compression readings! Good luck!
