70hp Johnny a good choice?

Been looking for a motor for my Lone * Star project. 16' Medallion II. Deep V Hull is rated up to 110hp, weighs about 750#s.

Found this one.

Owner says he knows nothing about it and has not responded to my request for a serial number yet.




Thinking it is a mid to late 80's.

No controls and running condition unknown. No prop and lower has been removed but comes with it.

I know to check compression.

Can Powershift 2 controls be modified to work?

Is it worth a C note? Thoughts or advice?

That's a good motor if properly maintained and cared for. From the picture, that's not the case. You already know there is a LU problem, or they wouldn't have taken it off. "Unknown" condition and an owner that knows nothing means its either stolen or he knows its junk but won't admit it.

Jim The LU being off does make me think real hard. Still might be worth the drive to pick it up.

Racerone is correct. $250-$300 Tops...on a good day.

The "70%" is an arbitrary number. Others quote different percentages.

The key is a 750 pound 16 footer. An OMC 3 cyl 70 is the ideal motor.

That's an old boat - the rating probably doesn't mean much.

^^^ This is what I was thinking.

I know my 21' Starcraft 90hp Johnson is rated for 140. It works well for me and goes up to 40 mph with perfect conditions.

Was thinking the 70hp would push this up to mid 30's.

Waiting for the seller to reply with model number.

I have it's brother ... well, the fire department does. We put a jet drive on her instead of the prop. For a C note, she is good for parts. Anything over that is gravy!

To follow up I never heard back from the seller on the model and serial number on the above motor.

I was able to find another one. bought it this morning 1981 with a working power tilt. Owner say it screams. Time will tell if it has any issues.

Here it is it, came attached to a boat with trailer and the whole package cost $100.00.

Boat is going to the dump. The trailer is okay and will be sold. The motor is TBD.

Also came with some good extras that sweetened the deal.
