Re: 70hp johnson

IT MIGHT BE BAD FUEL LINE CONNECTION SUCKING AIR AND NOT LETTING FUEL GET TO CARB.

Hi Fishmaster,
I think that I would start by pulling the carbs off and do a thorough cleaning. Use a spray can of carb cleaner, and make sure that the cleaner passes thru all of the orfices and jets. Spray up the small tube and make sure that the cleaner comes out of the holes in front of and behind the throttle plates. After the cleaning I would get a manual and check the sync and link.
Good Luck

fishmaster- Go back about 2/3 months ago on this board use the search feature. This was hashed around for weeks on end. Most found there problems that are what you described. All 70 hp Johnson Evinrude motors from 82 thru 86. I found my answers for the same motor.
steve

fishmaster,While gummy carbs could be part of your problem I tend to feel that you may also have an ignition issue.Restricted carbs don't generally clear themselves between uses.Check also for corroded or loose ground lugs on engine, wiring to ignition switch ,and lanyard switch if equipped.Good luck.

Fishmaster:

I would say it's time to rebuild the carbs... It's not a difficult job if your handy and have basic hand tools and most importantly a good service manual to guide you through the process...

Before you tear into the carbs, check all the fuel connections... Outboards don't like to pull in air through the fuel system....

Also check to see if the ignition timing is advancing properly and that the armature plate is fully advancing and free to move to its stop at WOT...

To determine if the problem is fuel/carb related, when you try to go to WOT and it "falls flat" try pushing the key switch or button to choke/prime it... If it takes off, then the problem is carb related (sticking needle in seat not allowing enough fuel, plugged orrifice ect.)...

I would also install a fuel pump repair kit (there cheap$) at the time of the carb rebuild for "insurance"...
