My 2003 70 HP Suzuki (Johnson) 4-stroke tiller had a strange intermittent problem a couple days ago. I had to start it partially tilted up as I was launching in shallow water, although the impeller intake was still under water. In neutral it immediately made a loud rubbing/grinding noise, but there was no noise when in forward or reverse at idle. In forward, the motor would not go over a couple thousand RPMs and acted like it was missing (maybe it was in limp home mode). Every time I shifted back into neutral, the loud rubbing/grinding noise would reoccur.

After a while of forward trolling I turned the engine off, then on again, and everything went back to normal (no neutral noise and full rpm). I have not been able to duplicate this problem again but I am very concerned as my 3-year warranty expires in 6 days. It would be appreciated if any of you have an idea of the cause of the intermittent problem or advice on what to do with my warranty soon to expire.

Thanks in advance,
Dave Gulczinski
