Will the green coils off a 70's 85 hp work on a 1976 40 hp.I know the connectors will have to be cut off and spliced. How can you check the cylinoid

What model is the 85 HP ?--------Coils are cheap so why even think about doing this ?-----What is the 40 HP motor doing / not doing ?-----What trouble shooting if any has been done ?

It was a part motor I picked up because I have one just like it I have been using for years.I am trying to get it running.I HAVE ALREADY PUT A SEAL KIT IN THE FOOT.cleaned the starter.Carb kit.I pulled flywheel and adjusted point gap.Bought an aftermarket ignition switch .I wired it wrong and fried the coils. I was having trouble with the cylinoid first one was no good .Second one was acting up due to neutral safety switch out of adjustment.I will check the 85 and get model number.

The 85 hp is a1973 model.I tried these coil because everything is closed and coils will have to be ordered.Anyway I have no spark from The coils to the plugs. The oem Manuel has the blue and the blue with white stripe wires attaching to 2 different slots on the ignition switch. The aftermarket Marpac has a spot for magneto ignition.I wired blue and blue with white stripe to this.Is this right.

So you are saying you have both blue and blue-white on same terminal? Well there ya go. You have shorted them together, which is exactly what the CORRECT switch does when you turn it OFF.

The '73 coils work with about 300 Volts input. I don't know how much voltage the '76 Lo-Tension mag sends to the coils, but I'd be willing to bet it is less than 300V. No wonder the spark is weak.
